7 Best things to do in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum

These are 7 best things to do in Wadi Rum. Also known as the valley of the moon, Wadi Rum is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan.

If you are traveling with kids, both the Wadi Rum Jeep tour and staying in a Martian tent are a must do and take the top 2 places in the 7 best things to do in Wadi Rum. That is the best way to enjoy Wadi Rum, especially with the kids.

7 pillars of wisdom Trail
The 7 pillars of Wisdom rock formation is right in the beginning from the visitor centre. This will be the first attraction in the Wadi Rum jeep tour. These are not exactly 7 pillars, rather a huge rock formation segments of which can be construed as pillars. Names of a lot of things in Wadi Rum have been inspired by T.E Lawrence (British liaison officer during Arab revolts during early 20th century) and this rock formation is no exception. Its based on the name of his autobiographical account but it doesn’t bear much resemblance to anything else.
The most fun part of the trail is actually the huge sand dune, that you can climb and run down from – a sure fun thing for kids. This fun dune run is one of the best things to do in Wadi rum with kids.
If you are taking it as part of the Wadi Rum and Petra tour from Amman, make sure to take a wadi rum jeep tour separately.

Khalid Siq (inscriptions from long ago)
Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabataeans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings and inscriptions. Its interesting as not many people notice these inscriptions.
You will find more history of Nabataens in Petra, if you’re taking a Wadi Rum and Petra tour from Amman.

Barra canyon (echo point)
If the guide you choose for open jeep tour, is one of the folks who knows Wadi Rum in and out, he will surely take you here. This is also quite popular with the rock climbers and those who are looking for more pristine spots in Wadi Rum. There is a fantastic echo point here and I have included it in 7 great things to do in Wadi Rum, as kids love such little nuances.

  • Umm Froth Bridge, Wadi Rum
  • Little Bridge, Wadi Rum
  • Barra Canyon, Wadi Rum

Little bridge and Umm Froth bridge (you can climb up)
There are 2 rock bridge formations – Little Bridge and Umm Froth Bridge. You can climb on the Umm Froth bridge as its much wider even on the arch while Little bridge is a narrower formation even though its lower in height.
Even if you don’t want to climb up the bridge, you can rest for a bit as there is a small tea kiosk and place to relax your legs closeby.

  • Lawrence House, Wadi Rum
  • Lawrence Face, Wadi Rum
  • Souq in front of Lawrence face

Make your own Stone pile near Lawrence house
The Lawrence House is more of a resting place during the jeep ride. There are a whole lot of piles of stones and make sure to make your own pile of stones before you leave.
Another one dedicated to Lawrence is the face (it’s a small rock with a face and a Souq of sorts). There is nothing natural or exceptional about them and since they are on the way to Umm Froth bridge so you can step out and stretch your legs for some time here.
