When can you start traveling with a baby?
In this post I have tried to cover some tips on traveling with a baby and some ideas and tips for flying with an infant.
“When can you start traveling with a baby” – is a question many new moms & dads have often posed to me. My short answer: “Right now or as soon as the doc allows you 🙂 “
The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories..
When children travel since babyhood they are very comfortable traveling be it a long drive, train journey or a cross country flight. Whether you are looking for tips on traveling with a baby or tips for flying with an infant, I have them all covered in this blog.
I found traveling with my breastfed and/or bottle-fed infants, younger than 6 months way easier to handle than their older counterparts as they mostly drank milk and slept. We could pretty much pack them in a stroller or baby carrier and be on the go. For an older infant it was slightly more complex with mashed food and limited outside food etc.
Homestays and living with friends came to rescue almost till the child(ren) turned 2. That would be the first amongst tips on traveling with a baby, pick the right destination and make sure to feed them while take off and landing so they are sorted during the flight.
When I look back I realize that with our children, we have taken just as many relaxed vacations as fully packed and overflowing ones. I have even traveled alone with my children (5yrs and 3 months) on a long flight to US.

We have tried to give our children a mixed exposure of all kinds of journeys as well as all kinds of vacation rentals. They have stayed in a friend’s house, homestays, budget hotels, lavish 5 star properties and resorts. Camping is on our next to-do list.
All places are not child friendly and that is where our attitude as a parent helps. As a parent we need to be ok with our child surviving only on milk once in a while, breastfeeding outside of the room/home when required, letting the children plan some part of the trip and go along with it, temper tantrums as this happens when children are a bit too tired or hungry.. but I feel all of this is completely manageable and it is alright. Everything!! And this would be my tip for flying with an infant. If you go with a can-do attitude you will find so many things even on a flight to keep the kids entertained and sorted.
Having a baby or child is no excuse to stop traveling. It just requires a more careful thought about the destination and the place to stay. Choosing the right weather to travel and appropriate packing can go a long way in making happy travel memories. Check out this post for some tips on packing right and travel happy.
